Clinical trials in nuclear medicine: Towards a more enabling framework

Published: October 16, 2026

EANM has published a new working paper, Clinical Trials in Nuclear Medicine: Towards a More Enabling Framework, which examines the obstacles to clinical research in the field and sets out proposals to address them. EANM invites stakeholders to review the recommendations, provide feedback and indicate their support.

Clinical trials are central to bringing new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to patients. In nuclear medicine, however, trials are hindered by complex regulation, limited infrastructure, funding constraints and differences in national practice. The working paper identifies these barriers and recommends measures to create a more coordinated, proportionate and sustainable approach, while upholding patient safety and scientific quality.

Call for stakeholder review

The publication marks an important step towards strengthening the clinical trials landscape in nuclear medicine. EANM is now inviting stakeholders to review and validate the recommendations, provide feedback and endorse the proposed direction.

Input from across the community will be essential to ensure that the recommendations reflect practical needs and can be translated into action. Researchers, healthcare professionals, clinical trial sponsors, regulators, policymakers, industry representatives, research organisations and patient organisations are all encouraged to contribute their perspectives and expertise.

EANM looks forward to working with stakeholders to build consensus, identify priorities and support the implementation of the recommendations. Together, we can help create better conditions for clinical research and accelerate the development of innovative nuclear medicine approaches for the benefit of patients.
