Technologists Benchmark Documents EQF7

This document addresses the need for continual professional development of Nuclear Medicine Technologists (NMTs) in response to the rapid clinical and technological evolution of nuclear medicine. Led by the EANM Technologists Committee (EANMTC), and developed with the support of European and international partner societies, it defines competencies for advanced NMT practice.

EFQ7 reflects the multidisciplinary and increasingly complex nature of nuclear medicine, including hybrid imaging, theranostics, innovation and clinical research, defining advanced competencies at a Master’s degree level (EQF 7) and supporting harmonised, high-quality nuclear medicine practice across Europe.

Key contributions were provided by the British Nuclear Medicine Society (BNMS), the Belgian Association of Nuclear Medicine (BELNUC), the European Federation of Radiographers Societies (EFRS), the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM – Nuclear Medicine SIG), and international peers including the Australian and New Zealand Society of Nuclear Medicine (ANZSNM) and the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (CAMRT).

Technologists Benchmark Documents EQF6

Nuclear medicine technologists (NMTs) and radiographers (NMRs) are highly specialised professionals with key responsibilities in patient care, imaging, radiopharmacy, radiation protection and radionuclide therapy across Europe, with education and roles varying between countries.

This document defines harmonised Bachelor’s degree–level competencies for advanced practice in nuclear medicine, developed through international consensus led by the EANM Technologists Committee. It was created in collaboration with major partners and societies including the the European Federation of Radiographers Societies (EFRS), the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging Technologist Section (SNMMI-TS), the European Society of Therapeutic Radiation Oncology RTT committee (ESTRO-RTT), the Australian and New Zealand Society of Nuclear Medicine (AZSNM) and national nuclear medicine organisations.

As the field evolves with advanced and hybrid imaging technologies, this framework supports high-quality, safe practice, professional recognition and improved patient care across Europe.
