WHA adopts landmark resolution on strengthening global medical imaging capacity

In May 2025, the World Health Assembly officially adopted a new resolution calling on all UN Member States to strengthen medical imaging capacity, including nuclear medicine, PET and PET-MRI.

This milestone follows years of evidence-building through major international efforts, including the two Lancet Oncology Commissions on Radiotherapy & Theranostics and Medical Imaging & Nuclear Medicine, which highlighted the critical gaps in access to imaging worldwide and the dramatic impact that improved imaging availability can have on patient outcomes, mortality, and health-system performance.

The resolution requires countries to enhance equitable access, invest in imaging infrastructure and workforce training, integrate imaging into national health plans, and report progress to WHO every two years. Its implementation will have far-reaching implications for access to nuclear medicine and theranostics globally.

We invite our community to read the full resolution to understand its scope and future impact on our field.
